Destination golfers have been looking forward to this moment for years. The Cliffs - hailed as a world-class bucket-list course and the latest design from Darius Oliver - has finally begun construction.
While this illustrious project was paused due to the 2019 bushfires and ensuing COVID pandemic, ground was broken on December 9, 2022. Hole construction is planned for February 2023, and the course itself will hopefully open in 2024.
Located on the natural cliffs above Pelican Lagoon, on Kangaroo Island, off the South Australia coast, this course is designed to highlight the natural landscape and create exciting play using natural elements. Oliver is known for other island-based courses, such as King Island GC, which is located between Tasmania and mainland Aus. At The Cliffs, five of the courses’ holes run along dramatic clifftops that are 30 meters high and over 500 million years old.
In an interview with Golf Course Architecture, Oliver admitted that some of his favorite holes aren’t on the coastline. “The long par-three sixth and short par-four tenth, with its big natural amphitheater fairway, are among my favorites,” he said.
Plans for the location include the golf course and clubhouse, a restaurant, sports bar, outdoor entertainment space, four lux suites and twenty additional accommodation "pods".
