The Covid-19 pandemic has prevented international visitors to Australia since early 2020. And while the borders to the country are closed, the state of its golf is looking brighter! The reopening of Sandringham GC in the Sandbelt (see here for blog post) is only the tip of the iceberg. Other improvements and news from Australia include the completion of a very exciting four-year renovation at Peninsula-Kingswood CC.
Massive amounts of work to both the North and South courses was done by OCM- Ogilvy Cocking and Mead, with input by Mike Clayton. Following the smashing success of Victoria GC, among others in the country, Peninsula-Kingswood has installed Pure Distinction grass for its greens. A recent article in Golf Architecture mentions:
“Every green, bunker and tee has been redesigned or rebuilt, fairways reshaped and re-grassed, creeks and water bodies added, a state-of-the-art irrigation system installed, and cart paths, drainage and vegetation developed. What Peninsula Kingswood has achieved in the past four years is basically what every other sandbelt course has spent the last 20 or 30 years accomplishing.” – Mike Cocking, co-designer
For serious golfers to Australia the work at Peninsula-Kingswood a visit here very compelling. The Mornington Peninsula is a little further south of the Sandbelt outside of Melbourne, and with plenty of accommodations, additional golf options and tours to be had- its an area that we are very excited about.
